What is the history of Shakespeare's Globe?
The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. It burned down in 1613 during a performance of Henry VIII. The modern reconstruction was the vision of American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, who campaigned for decades to rebuild the theatre. Shakespeare's Globe opened in 1997, 230 metres from the original site.
