It was confirmed today that the film of the stage production of Hamilton Broadway will premiere on Disney Plus from 3 July 2020.

Filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in 2016 under the direction of the show's original director Thomas Kail, The Walt Disney Company and producers and creators Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeffrey Seller and Thomas Kail moved the release date forward by more than a year as theatre closures on Broadway and in London's West End keep audiences at home.

“I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down,” Miranda said in the press release. “I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”

Disney is reported to have paid $USD 75 million for worldwide screening rights to the blockbuster musical. It was originally due for cinema release in October 2021.

Robert A. Iger, executive chairman of The Walt Disney Company, said "In light of the extraordinary challenges facing our world, this story about leadership, tenacity, hope, love and the power of people to unite against the forces of adversity is both relevant and impactful."

This "movie" recording of the award-winning musical features original cast members including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Daveed Diggs, and Renée Elise Goldsberry who were all honoured with Tony Awards for their performances amongst the 11 Tony Awards the show received including Best Musical in 2016.

Hamilton would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (2016), the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. The West End production would collect 7 Olivier Awards in 2018 including Best Musical.

The tale  of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding fathers is described as "the story American then, told by America now" thanks to it's ground-breaking score which fuses R and B, pop, hip-hop, and soul blended with traditional musical theatre stylings.

Hamilton the musical has book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alkex Lacamoire. The production features costumes by Paul Tazewell, scenic design by David Korins, lighting design by Howell Binkley, wigs by Charles G Lapointe  and sound by Nevin Steinberg.

The show will continue at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway and at London's Victoria Palace theatre when theatres re-open. HAMILTON BROADWAY TICKETS SIGN UP DISNEY PLUS HERE
