It is a heart-warming night, Chris bluffs and stutters, clearly enjoying impersonating his father through his famous lines, but personally I preferred it when he spoke plainly as himself.

Sadly this fine adaptation has a very brief run – I do hope another theatre can be persuaded to allow us to experience this play with this cast once more - and soon…..It deserves to be seen for its own qualities, for the fresh insights it brings to a work we think we know all too well, and for what it tells us of Wilde as well. It showcases in exemplary fashion the jostling, unstable and ultimately tragic combination of talents and aspirations that comprise Wilde's unique persona. As usual, he perceived the truth ahead of all the critics: ‘Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry is what the world thinks me: Dorian is what I would like to be - in other ages, perhaps.’

Dette er scenekunst på et sofistikeret og kreativt niveau, hvor alt i ordets mest rene forstand afhænger af de medvirkende selv. Der findes ingen scenografi, kun enkelte kig til kostumerne – en hat eller en frakke her og der – samt et par stole, når det er nødvendigt. Det er også værd at understrege, at St James Studio ikke er det nemmeste sted at fange publikums fælles opmærksomhed, da scenen er skubbet ud til siden for at give plads til baren. Der er for mange akavede vinkler og niveauer at spille op imod, og selve scenen er bittelille. Stor ros skal derfor lyde til hele holdet og til James Phillips for hans instruktion, såvel som hans lysende og præcist kalibrerede manuskript.
