The Old Vic has announced three productions today which will join their already anounced schedule of shows for 2017. The new shows are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax and Girl From The North Country. The Old Vic celebrates the 50th anniversary of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead which premiered on its stage. This is the play that made Tom Stoppard’s name overnight. Against the backdrop of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this mind-bending situation comedy sees two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz (Daniel Radcliffe) and Guildenstern (Joshua McGuire), take centre stage. Increasingly out of their depth, the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of this iconic drama. Mel Brooks has announced that his musical Young Frankenstein is heading to the UK. Based on his 1974 of the same name, Young Frankenstein will open at the Newcastle Theatre Royal for a limited pre-West End engagement from 26 August to 9 September 2017, before opening in London’s West End in Autumn 2017. Following a limited Broadway run, Young Frankenstein is being re-worked. Brooks will work with co-writer Thomas Meehan and collaborate with Broadway director and choreographer Susan Stroman for for this all-singing all-dancing new production. Following his appearance in the acclaimed production of David Mamet’s American Buffalo, Damian Lewis will return to the West End in Ian Rickson’s production of Edward Albee’s Tony Award-winning play The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? at the Theatre Royal Haymarket for a strictly limited twelve week season from 24 March 2017. Best known for his on-screen roles in Homeland, Wolf Hall and most recently Billions, he has regularly returned to the stage in productions at the National Theatre, Almeida as well as in the West End. The show has been seen in London several times recently, and it is clearly a work that repays revisitation, and reinterpretation. I will certainly be back to see this version again.
