Welcome to the February 2017 BritishTheatre.com playlist. We thought it would be fun to share with you some of the tracks we are listening to at BritishTheatre.com HQ as well as tracks from some of the shows in the West End and on Broadway at the moment. This month we’ve included a tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber who has become the first composer since Rodgers and Hammerstein to have four musicals running concurrently on Broadway. There’s a track from the new cast album for Dear Evan Hansen which we love, tastes of Young Frankenstein, Bat Out Of Hell, An American In Paris, 42nd Street, and from Idina (does she need a surname) Menzel. Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein Comes To Garrick Theatre

Mel Brooks' new musical comedy Young Frankenstein will come to London's Garrick Theatre in Autumn 2017

Following the success of Mel Brooks’ smash hit musical The Producers comes Young Frankenstein – a new musical comedy based on Brooks’ smash hit movie of the same name which will open at London’s Garrick Theatre on 28 September 2017. Young Frankenstein tickets are now on sale. Young Frankenstein, the wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Mary Shelley classic, see’s Frederick Frankenstein, an esteemed New York brain surgeon and professor, inherit a castle and laboratory in Transylvania from his deranged genius grandfather, Victor Von Frankenstein. He now faces a dilemma – does he continue to run from his family’s tortured past or does he stay in Transylvania to carry on his grandfather’s mad experiments reanimating the dead and, in the process, fall in love with his sexy lab assistant Inga? Following a critically acclaimed season in 2015 at The Hope Theatre, Bill Rosenfield’s coming of age and coming out play 46 Beacon is to transfer to London’s Trafalgar Studios 2 in April 2017 for a limited season. Set in 1970’s Boston, Alan and Robert spend a balmy July evening hoping for a connection – emotional or physical. The address is 46 Beacon, a theatrical hotel, whilst Robert and Alan are at different stages of their lives, they each have something the other yearns for! Bill Rosenfield said, “I couldn’t be happier that a semi-autobiographical account of a special night in my life is opening in the West End. Ultimately the play came out of my need to express just how far and fast Gay politics had progressed, in a touching but, I hope, also humorous way, and I am really excited to bring it to a wider London audience”. Following the postponement of Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill last year due to the joyous news of Audra McDonald’s Pregnancy, an announcement has been made that the show will transfer to the West End this Summer, opening at Wyndham’s Theatre on 17 June 2017. Audra McDonald, the Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning singer, will be making her West End debut portraying jazz legend Billie Holiday in a performance that won her a record-breaking sixth Tony Award. Audra is the first and only person to receive awards in all four acting categories. Idina Menzel UK Tour

Broadway’s first lady Idina Menzel returns to the UK for a series of concerts around the UK in June 2017. The artist sometimes known as Adele Nazeem, originated the role of Elphaba in the hit musical Wicked, workshopped and originated the role of Maureen in Rent, and originated the role of Elizabeth in If/Then on Broadway. She had a recurring role in HT series Glee and was the voice of Queen Elsa and sang the Oscar and Grammy award-winning song Let It Go in the Disney film Frozen. This summer Idina will perform concerts in London (15 June), Bristol (14 June), Portsmouth (16 June), Manchester (18 June), Birmingham (19 June), Glasgow (20 June), and Cork (25 June).
