There’s no stopping fans of musical theatre. For animator Simon Chong, it seemed perfectly obviously that the opening number from The Book of Mormon should be presented in the style of South Park. A truly delightful, engaging and joyous piece, chock full of important subjects and thoughts.
There is an abundance of shrill shouting, tiresome arguing and pedestrian staging. It’s like watching Revenge but without the irony. Or the humour. Or the style.
There is, perhaps, 40 minutes of good material here, material which ungarnished with irrelevancy may have made for an interesting theatrical experience.
It was all that I could do to keep conscious for most of the First Act. The loud snoring of a fellow patron assisted more in that feat than the script, concept or performances.
It was announced today that Amanda Drew, Jack Lowden and Diana Quick will join Kristin Scott Thomas in Sophocle’s tragedy Electra which is being staged by The Old Vic in December. Best known for her work in television dramas such as Broadchurch and Silent Witness, Amandra Drew will play Chrysothemis, whilst Lowden, who recently won the Olivier for his work in Ghosts will play Orestes. This is a lacklustre effort in every way – about as far from the triumph that was his Chariots of Fire staging as can be imagined. It’s unceasingly uninventive and desperately dull. And the cast shout endlessly.
In a move set to secure its long-term future, West London fringe theatre is moving to former playhouse The Coronet in Notting Hill. The Print Room’s current landlord recently announced plans to demolish its current building to make way for luxury accommodation, prompting a search for a new home. Now, the Print Room is to take up permanent residency at the Coronet in Notting Hill, which was originally built as a theatre but has most recently been a two-screen cinema. The Print Room will launch its inaugural season at the venue this autumn in the building’s smaller cinema space, which will be converted into a 100-seat theatre. Plans for the venue will eventually see it’s conversion into three flexible spaces – the largest of which will remain operational as a cinema, under the direction of the Print Room’s team, led by artistic director Anda Winters.
