Jemma Redgrave and Oliver Cotton are to play Stephanie Abrahams and Dr Feldmann respectively in a new limited UK tour of Tom Kempinski’s award-winning play Duet For One. Jemma Redgrave is best known for her roles as Eve Granger in Cold Blood and Bernie Wolfe in BBC One’s Holby City. Actor and writer Oliver Cotton for his role as Cesare Borgia in BBC’s The Borgias as well as Penny Dreadful, Ripper Street and the film The Dark Knight Rises. In this powerful, deeply moving, and at times poignantly funny play, Stephanie Abrahams, a brilliant concert violinist who seemingly has it all, is forced to re-evaluate her life when struck down by an unforeseen tragedy. It hasn’t helped this production also that current West End farce mega-hit The Play That Goes Wrong visited this venue just a few weeks ago, underlining further how archaic this type of farce is.
Maybe we were all weary at the end of a full day of theatre; maybe, and with ample justification, the cast were flagging after appearances in different roles in the previous two parts of the trilogy, but whatever the explanation Richard III seemed something of an anti-climax rather than a natural culmination of this notable revival of the Barton/Hall Wars of the Roses.
Henry VI stands out as the play in this triptych that most benefits from Barton’s editing and clarifications. Characters and scenes are cut away in profusion to reveal a focus on the nature of good and bad governance.
