REVIEW: The Importance Of Being Earnest, Vaudeville Theatre ✭✭✭

David Suchet In The Importance Of Being Earnest

Director AdrianNoble strikes gold in the quartet of lovers: Gwendolyn, Jack, Cicely and Algernon. Without any question, Emily Barber and Imogen Doel are utterly exquisite, fabulously surprising, and inventively adorable as, respectively, Ms Fairfax and Ms Cardew. I have never seen better performances of those roles on any professional stage. Algernon is here played by Philip Cumbus, whose hunger and enthusiasm for Cicely matches his fervour for muffins. The gifted Michael Benz is a spiffing Jack/Earnest.

REVIEW: Closer, Donmar Warehouse ✭✭✭✭

Closer at the Donmar Warehouse

Watching David Leveaux’ stylish revival at the Donmar Warehouse, Closer seems not so much a play about people who don’t have children yet as a play about grown up children. Games, set-ups, lies, betrayals, revenge, secrets – the machinations of the four characters (who are the strangers who become lovers/lovers who become strangers) resemble schoolyard activities. Marber’s dialogue is sharp, ugly and vicious; it is often very funny too.

Listen To Preview Tracks From The Sunny Afternoon Cast Album

Recording session for The Kinks Sunny Afternoon musical

Sunny Afternoon, the critically acclaimed new musical, which tells the story of the early life of Ray Davies and the rise to stardom of The Kinks, has released four preview tracks from the official cast recording album, released later this month, with a further three tracks still to be released. All 29 tracks on the album are performed entirely by members of the company, with John Dagleish as Ray Davies, George Maguire as Dave Davies, Ned Derrington as Pete Quaife and Adam Sopp as Mick Avory. Ray Davies said: “We used the cast members to play as a band rather than hire session musicians, which is very unusual. Everyone rose to the challenge magnificently. It was the first time they had been in the studio as a group which gave the record a feeling of vitality, energy and innocence of a band just starting out. In a way it was … Read more
