Disney have released a new featurette for an American cinema chain that shows further scenes from Into The Woods and focuses on the opening scene. With its UK release date estimated at 7th January, excitement is growing to see what director Rob Marshall has done with the classic Sondheim/Lapine musical. Opera North’s hit production of the classic American musical, Carousel, returns to UK stages for a new tour following a sell-out run at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris. One of the greatest musical works of the 20th century, Carousel was composed by one of Broadway’s most successful and enduring partnerships, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, whose much-loved stage and screen legacy includes The Sound of Music, Oklahoma! and The King and I. Asked if he had ever been tempted to write an opera, Richard Rodgers replied that he had, and that Carousel was the closest he had come to doing so. International musical superstar Idina Menzel has announced UK and Ireland dates as part of her upcoming 2015 world tour. Best known for originating the role of Elphaba in Wicked, she also originated the role of Maureen in Rent and was the voice of Elsa in Disney’s Frozen. Baz Bamigboye in today’s Daily Mail has reported that Baz Luhrman is looking at possible London theatres for his stage musical version of his hit film Strictly Ballroom. Based on the 1992 hit movie, the stage production played in Sydney this year and is due to travel on to Melbourne with other Australian stops in contention. Baz is apparently hoping to bring Strictly to the West End in late 2015 or early 2016 if a theatre can be found, but with big musicals like Newsies, Kinky Boots, Pippin, Aladdin, Motown, Elf and others looking for musical houses the show may have to wait a bit. In the meantime apparently, there are revisions being made to the production before its Melbourne opening.
