REVIEW: Brass, Hackney Empire ✭✭✭✭✭

National Youth Theatre's production of Benjamin Till's Brass

The show’s score is one that you want – you need – to revisit again and again. Till and his collaborators are such major talents that there isn’t a single line, phrase or bar that doesn’t repay repeated hearing. Quite honestly, it’s a breath-taking achievement.

Real Life Story Of Performer’s Voice Loss Challenge Comes To Pleasance

Can You Hear Me Running at the Pleasance Theatre London

Can You Hear Me Running? is based on the true story of Louise Breckon-Richards – a performer who lost her voice and tried to overcome it through running the London Marathon. Whilst auditioning for Mamma Mia! in 2009, Louise’s voice gave way, shattering her chances. Playwright Jo Harper used Louise’s actual notes, blog entries and her personal diary, to show her journey as she meets a host of people, from voice professionals to new-age healers. Louise comments: I never imagined how losing the strength in one muscle would lead me to find another. When I lost my voice as a performer, I discovered my running legs and ran a marathon, which ultimately … Read more

REVIEW: Glasgow Girls, Assembly Hall, Edinburgh Festival ✭✭✭✭✭

Glasgow Girls

While the musical inevitably simplifies complex issues, it seamlessly integrates some of the debate about Britain’s attitudes towards refugees and asylum seekers. With these issues as relevant today as they were when the show premiered in 2012, Glasgow Girls is a powerful, compelling plea for seeing refugees as people rather than just faceless statistics.
