Constellations is a 75 minute jewel of a play. It is a play about things that happen, might happen and could happen – just like life.
The acting is of the highest order. Every word, every pause, every gesture – all is precisely calibrated and thoughtfully designed to ensure maximum interest, a real involvement in the many disparate lives of these two intriguing characters. Jake Gyllenhaal proves to be entirely perfect as the ordinary bee-keeper, Roland. Ruth Wilson is very very funny, but also fragile and stern and unfair – whatever the situation requires, Wilson provides.
There is a great deal to like in this production. Payne’s writing is intriguing and the pace never really flags. It is a good play, just not a brilliant one.
Blurred Lines is one of the best things to play at the National Theatre in the last six years. It is a significant and provocative work of great sweep and scope.
