They took firm hold of Larson’s lyrics and crescendoing rock melodies – every word, every beat, brimming with anger and exigency; his lyrics carry imperative messages that couldn’t be swallowed passively by Larson’s audiences, and capture a sense of urgency characteristic of a life lost too soon.
Anton Stephans and Noel Sullivan are to join the previously announced Debbie Kurup, Krysten Cummings and Damien Flood – all previous cast members of Larson’s hit rock musical Rent.
Coleman worked in an era where Broadway was consistently part of the Top 10. Not every number presented as part of Rhythm Of Life deserved placement in the show, but audiences were left with no doubt that he was clearly a very talented composer with an ability to craft some surefire hits. A talented and versatile cast means that even a big spender would not come away disappointed.
It has been announced that the current national tour of Anything Goes will close four months earlier than planned. Anything goes was a co-production between Sheffield Theatres and Stage Entertainment and starred Debbie Kurup and Matt Rawle. Kurup tweeted that she was ‘devastated and angry’ that the show was closing early. Anything Goes will plays its last performance on May 30 at the Grand Opera House in Belfast. Where there should be style, there is smut; where there should be grace, there is gurning; where there should be passion there is pointlessness. Anything Goes is not a pantomime; nor is it a Carry On Gang film. It is certainly chock-full of silliness and slightly dirty fun, but it only works with an excess of energy focussed on style, believable characters, romance and the unlikeliest of plots.
