No Tony Awards Telecast for the United Kingdom

No UK telecast of the Tony Awards

It’s infuriating to us here at BritishTheatre.com that the United Kingdom is not deemed worthy of a telecast of the Tony Awards YET AGAIN! London’s thriving West End is a mecca for theatre lovers. Last year alone over 15,000,000 (Figures from Society Of London Theatre) attended a show in one of the capital’s theatres. Harold Prince is famous for his mantra that “You can’t really listen to a musical unless you can look at it“, and I’m a firm believer in that statement here. Each year  British tourists and hard-core theatre fans travel to New York to enjoy theatre, yet we are not afforded a chance to watch a programme that the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing proport to be Broadway’s calling-card to the world. The Tony Awards 2017 were held at Radio City Musical Hall last night (June 11) hosted by Kevin Spacey with Dear Evan Hansen the biggest winner on the night taking home six awards including the highly coveted award for Best Musical. Hello Dolly! starring Bette Midler won four awards including Best Revival of a Musical. In the play category Oslo won two awards including Best Play. Britain’s Nigel Hook won Best Scenic Design Of a Play for his work on the The Play That Goes Wrong. Our quote of the night came from Ben Platt who won the Tony for Best Actor In A Musical. It has been announced that Kevin Spacey will host the 71st Annual Tony Awards live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday 11 June 2017. This will be Spacey’s first time hosting the prestigious awards event. The 70th Annual Tony Awards were held last night in New York and as expected Hamilton triumphed winning 11 of the prestigious awards including Best New Musical. A big winner on the night included the revival of The Colour Purple, which won two awards including Best Musical Revival and Best Actress in a Musical for Cynthia Erivo.
