Anyone who knows me will tell you that I love musicals. So I was intrigued to see that Chris Caggiano who teaches musical-theatre history at the Boston Conservatory had compiled an online list of the worst 50 musicals ever. I have to say from the start that I disagree with about 70% of his list, but it did prompt me to think about shows I consider truly awful. I couldn’t come up with 50 but I did come up with five. I limited my list down to shows I had actually seen, which made it all the more challenging. As we settle into our Christmas Day schedules with family here in the UK, spare a thought for our Broadway counterparts, many of whom are performing in shows today. A massive 17 Broadway shows will perform today (Thursday 25th December) many at 7pm or 8pm, including Cinderella, Disgraced, Honeymoon in Vegas, Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots, Les Miserables, On the Town, Side Show, Beautiful, Chicago, The Elephant Man, Matilda, Mamma Mia!, The Phantom of the Opera, Pippin, Rock of Ages, Wicked and Motown. Last year in the holiday season over 1 million people saw a Broadway show grossing $113.5 million according to the Broadway League.
