Show Boat Comes To Sheffield Theatres

Show Boat at Sheffield Theatres December 2015

Sheffield Theatres Artistic Director Daniel Evans has today announced the company for his new production of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s musical Show Boat which will play at the theatre from December 2015 to January 2016. This epic musical is based on the classic novel by Edna Ferber and spans three generations of show folk as they perform along the Mississippi River. Labelled one of the most romantic musicals of all time, Show Boat’s score contains musical theatre standards including Ol’ Man River, Make Believe and Cant Help Lovin’ Dat Man. Showboat was a ground-breaking moment in American musical theatre history marking the first time that songs helped tell the story marking the beginning of the modern musical. City Of Angels at the Domar Warehouse directed by Josie Rourke

City of Angels has an impeccable pedigree – a book by Larry Gelbart, lyrics by David Zippel and a rich, brassy score from Cy Coleman. It provides great scope for sexy, funny, thrills and surprises. And tremendous singing.

OPINION: Do We Need More Dogfights?

There are questions to be asked about Dogfight. Any attempt at a review really ought to address those questions rather than simply parroting the plot and blurting out an opinion. Is it any good? Well, first let me declare an interest – I am fortunate enough to represent two clients appearing in the show, Cellen Chugg Jones and Samuel J Weir. It would be remiss of me not to mention this, and while I thought both were outstanding performances, it doesn’t really have any bearing on what I thought of the show. Suffice to say both men did me proud, turning in dazzlingly focused and nuanced performances. As Boland, right-hand man to Jamie Muscato’s thrilling Eddie, Chugg Jones gives a performance of raw masculinity and power. I probably would say that though, wouldn’t I?
