Douglas Mayo had an opportunity after the opening night of Grey Gardens to speak with the shows creators Scott Frankel (Music), Michael Korie (Lyrics) and Doug Wright (Book) to discuss the show and get their thoughts on the current production at Southwark Playhouse. On the morning I spoke to the creators, the first of many 5 star reviews had started to come in for the production and the team were elated. Not many people know that Grey Gardens was the first musical ever to be adapted from a documentary. How did you go about tackling the adaptation to make it work for a musical theatre stage? With music by Scott Frankel, book by Doug Wright and lyrics by Michael Korie, Grey Gardens was the first Broadway musical to be based on a documentary. The show tells the story of Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and Edith Bouvier Beale who were Jacqueline Kennedy’s aunt and cousin. Directed by Tom Sutherland, Grey Gardens stars Sheila Hancock and Jenna Russell with Billy Boyle, Aaron Sidwell, Jeremy Legat, Ako Mitchell and Rachel Anne Rayham. Final casting has been announced today for the European premiere of Grey Gardens the musical which will play at the Southwark Playhouse from Saturday 2 January – Saturday 6 February 2016. The musical Grey Gardens is based on the iconic documentary, telling real life rise and fall of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s aunt and cousin, Edith and Edie Bouvier Beale.  Starting in 1941 at an engagement party at Grey Gardens, the Bouvier’s mansion in East Hampton, Long Island, the musical tracks the progression of the two women’s lives from American aristocrats to reclusive social outcasts living in such squalid conditions, in a home overrun by cats, that the Health Department deemed the mansion ‘unfit for human habitation’.
