Our friends at Theater Talk have recently released this great interview with Jennifer Holliday, who is currently appearing in The Colour Purple on Broadway. Holliday is perhaps best-known as the original Effie in the Broadway production of Dreamgirls thirty years ago, a performance that won her a Tony Award. It’s an interesting conversation talking about how the role developed, her working relationship with director / choreographer Michael Bennett. For musical theatre fans this is a real treat and of interest as London finally gets a chance to see Dreamgirls on stage for the first time. The new production of the Tony Award-winning musical will open at London’s Savoy Theatre from 19 November 2016. Inspired by R&B music acts in 1960s America, Dreamgirls transports you to a revolutionary time in American music history. Dreamgirls charts the tumultuous journey of a young female singing trio, from Chicago, Illinois called ‘The Dreams’, as they learn the hard lesson that show business is as tough as it is fabulous, and features the classic songs ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’, ‘I Am Changing’, ‘Listen’ and ‘One Night Only’ . As previously confirmed, American actress and singer Amber Riley will make her West End debut playing soulful singer ‘Effie White’ in the production, which will be Directed and Choreographed by Olivier and Tony Award-winning Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Disney’s Aladdin and Something Rotten!). It was announced today thet Amber Riley will make her West End debut in the UK premiere of the Tony-Award winning Dreamgirls, which is to be presented at The Savoy Theatre from November 2016. Dreamgirls will be directed by Olivier and Tony-Award winning Casey Nicholaw. Best known for her role as Mercedes Jones in the musical comedy sensation Glee, Riley will take on the iconic role of Effie White .
