Rhys Ifans is to star as Ebenezer Scrooge in a new production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic Theatre in November 2017. The new adaptation is by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter And The Cursed Child) and will be directed by the Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus. The classic Christmas tale which sees a cold-hearted miser visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve is an uplifting tale of redemption and a firm family favourite. Ifans recently performed in King Lear at the Old Vic and is perhaps best known for his film work including Snowden, Notting Hill, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, and Elizabeth – The Golden Age. A Christmas Carol will be designed by Rob Howell, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, Sound by Simon Baker and composition and arrangements by Christopher Nightingale. A Christmas Carol starts previews at The Old Vic from … Read more
Groundhog Day Original Broadway Cast Album Broadway Records 4 Stars BUY A COPY Based on the iconic film, Groundhog Day is the new musical by Tim Minchin, award-winning composer of Matilda. Opening at the Old Vic in London I was enamoured with the show’s ability to take a complicated premise and make it work musically. Minchin’s music and lyrics still pack a punch. Groundhog Day at its core is about self-realisation and redemption and Minchin’s score reflects this in an intelligent and honest way. The central performance of Andy Carl as obnoxious and egotistical weatherman Phil Connors translates beautifully from stage to cast album. It’s a performance that won him the Olivier Award in London and when you hear him sing “I’m seeing you for the first time” in Seeing You the show’s closing number you truly can hear a transformation. As Rita Hanson, Barrett Doss is a perfect foil … Read more
For a 10 week trial, this production of Groundhog Day is as good or better than many shows I have seen this year. A West-end transfer must surely be on the cards and I’m sure Andy Karl would be up for a Broadway run. Just get down to the Old Vic asap to see this stunning show. Writing and production of this calibre must be seen!
