The new adaptation is by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter And The Cursed Child) and will be directed by the Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus. The classic Christmas tale which sees a cold-hearted miser visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve is an uplifting tale of redemption and a firm family favourite. Groundhog Day Original Broadway Cast Album Broadway Records 4 Stars BUY A COPY Based on the iconic film, Groundhog Day is the new musical by Tim Minchin, award-winning composer of Matilda. Opening at the Old Vic in London I was enamoured with the show’s ability to take a complicated premise and make it work musically. Minchin’s music and lyrics still pack a punch. Groundhog Day at its core is about self-realisation and redemption and Minchin’s score reflects this in an intelligent and honest way. The central performance of Andy Carl as obnoxious and egotistical weatherman Phil Connors translates beautifully from stage to cast album. It’s a performance that won him the Olivier Award in London and when you hear him sing “I’m seeing you for the first time” in Seeing You the show’s closing number you truly can hear a transformation. As Rita Hanson, Barrett Doss is a perfect foil … Read more
The Old Vis has announced that Tim Key (Winer 2009 Edinburgh Comedy Award), Paul Ritter ( The Audience, The Norman Conquests) and Rufus Sewell ( Closer, ITV’s Victoria) will star in the revival of Yasmina Reza’s play Art.
For a 10 week trial, this production of Groundhog Day is as good or better than many shows I have seen this year. A West-end transfer must surely be on the cards and I’m sure Andy Karl would be up for a Broadway run. Just get down to the Old Vic asap to see this stunning show. Writing and production of this calibre must be seen!
BritishTheatre.com is pleased to bring you these great preview images of Groundhog Day at the Old Vic Theatre. Composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus, choreographer Peter Darling and designer Rob Howell, who worked together on the international musical version of Matilda, have joined forced with Danny Rubin on a brand new musical based on the 1993 hit film Groundhog Day. Groundhog Day is the story of Phil Connors (Andy Karl), a cynical Pittsburgh TV weatherman who is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in the isolated small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, when he finds himself caught in a time loop, forced to repeat the same day again and again…and again. As each day plays out exactly the same as before, Phil becomes increasingly despondent, but is there a lesson to be learnt through his experiences, will he ever unlock the secret and break … Read more
