Lin-Manuel Miranda surprised the young cast of the British Theatre Academy’s critically acclaimed production of his musical ‘Bring It On’ by watching the final show of their sold-out London summer season at Southwark Playhouse. Talking to the cast after the show, he told them: “You did an amazing job, it’s a very challenging show. I’m so proud and this was so wonderful. You made my wife cry! I came all the way from Cardiff, I wouldn’t have missed it! It was awesome. A bidding war is currently underway for a specially recorded presentation of Broadway’s mega-hit musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Wall Street Journal has reported that rather than making a new movie musical at this stage, a recording of the original Broadway production Hamilton made over two nights may well be the first wer see of the musical on screen. The recording features the Original Broadway cast with Miranda in the title role and according to reports even includes an interval. The interesting question at the moment is whether we will see the special recording on the big screen or through an online streaming service like Netflix on our own screens at home. Producers Jeffrey Seller and Cameron Mackintosh announced today that Hamilton London would extend its booking period to Saturday 30 March 2019.
This new cast album is of such a high standard that there will doubtless be many new productions of Working around the globe as a result of this recording. It’s a first class calling card for this undervalued gem of a show.
In the run-up to the London opening of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning musical Hamilton, some cynics wondered if the musical based on early American history would translate for British audiences. Based on the critical and public reception which greeted the show, those fears were unfounded. Hamilton is a resounding critical success and has been greeted with the type of audience reaction most shows can only dream of. In recent days on Twitter, Lin-Manuel revealed that three small lyric tweaks have been made to the libretto of Hamilton in London. The first tweak is in the song “Take a Break“. To celebrate the London opening of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton the musical, this great video featuring Lin-Manuel, Alex Lacamoire, the orchestra and cast of Hamilton created this great Brit Pop mash up. In true Aaron Sorkin ‘West-Wing’ style, this amazing sing and walk takes you from the orchestra pit of the show, backstage and then onto David Korins’ magnificant set on the stage of the newly renovated Victoria Palace Theatre. Ham4Ham started as a way to entertain the Hamilton fans waiting for tickets outside the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The shows soon became an institution with the great and good of Broadway taking part.
