Mark Ludmon reviews Guys and Dolls Live In Concert directed by Stephen Mear at the Royal Albert Hall.
During a cold and drizzly January, this new revival of Guys and Dolls offers a much-needed tonic of energy, happiness and fun. It is a show that is guaranteed to leave you smiling or humming the infectious score – catch it while you can!
On the strength of this first, tentative outing, concerts like this could come to rival those staged in the Encores! series in New York or by the Production Company in Australia. Jonathan Groff was truly terrific – and one was left wanting to see him headline a full scale production of this show, with Cynthia Erivo and Hannah Waddingham (and Amy Ellen Richardson) by his side.
Perfectly cast, directed, performed, sung and danced, this production will go down in history. It is now the new bench-mark for concert performances of great musicals.
