The Chichester Festival’s acclaimed production of King Lear starring Sir Ian McKellen, directed by Jonathan Munby will transfer to the Duke Of York’s Theatre from 11 July to 3 November 2018. The acclaimed Chichester Festival Theatre production of Quiz is to become the latest play by James Graham to transfer to London.
It has been announced that Michael Ball will play Mack Sennett in a major new revival of Jerry Herman’s Mack and Mabel which will play at the Chichester Festival Theatre prior to touring. Mack and Mabel is the story of the relationship between silent film star Mabel Normand and Keystone Cops director Mack Sennett. The productions will be directed by Jonathan Church and choreographed by Stephen Mear. Mack And Mabel received eight Tony nominations when it opened on Broadway in 1974. Herman’s other shows include The Grand Tour, Hello Dolly! Mame, and La Cage Aux Folles. Everyone in this company is superb in their part, everyone can really sing, really dance and really deliver the goods in terms of dramatic and comic acting. This is that rare beast: an exquisitely cast musical where the requirements of the parts have more importance in the casting process than potential box office draw or Twitter popularity. It is difficult to believe that there has ever been a better Rose than Staunton creates here.
Baz Bamigboye has reported in the Daily Mail today that the musical Gypsy starring Imelda Staunton will transfer to the Savoy Theatre for a 35 week run from March 30 to November 28. This production marks the first time that Gypsy has been seen in London since Angela Lansbury played the role 40 years ago. The production is directed by Jonathan Kent who directed Imelda and Michael Ball in the multi award winning production of Sweeney Todd which also hailed from Chichester Festival Theatre. Whatever people may say, Guys and Dolls is not foolproof. It can be done very badly. This is not one of those occasions…You would be silly to miss seeing their wonderful, world class performances.
A triumph – in almost every way…On the basis of tonight, it is a five star hit, which should transfer to the Palladium and play for a long time.
