Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Taylor Swift and Sir Ian McKellen are to star in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats movie musical. Working Title and Universal have confirmed that Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, James Corden and Sir Ian McKellen are to star in the Cats movie musical to be directed by Les Miserasbles director Tom Hooper. Cats is based on T S Eliot’s poetry which featured in The Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats. Hooper has been preparing the Cats movie musical for the past few years. The film is adapted by Billy Elliot’s Lee Hall. Cats the musical is Broadway’s fourth longest-running musical and the West End’s sixth longest-running musical. It is estimated to have grossed more than $USD 340 million to date and has been translated into more than 20 languages. Cats on stage featured direction by Trevor Nunn, iconic choreography by Gillian Lynne and design by John Napier.

Dame Gillian Lynne DBE was a noted ballerina choreographer actress, director, dancer and actress. Born in Bromley London on 20 February 1926 Gillian’s gift for dancing was discovered by a doctor. She had been under-performing at school, so her mother took her to the doctor and explained about her fidgeting and lack of focus. After hearing everything her mother said, the doctor told Lynne that he needed to talk to her mother privately for a moment. He turned on the radio and walked out. He then encouraged her mother to look at Lynne, who was dancing to the radio. The doctor noted that she was a dancer, and encouraged Lynne’s mother to take her to dance school. Gillian’s artistry led to a varied career unparalleled by many of her contemporaries her choreographic talents saw her contribute to shows on both side of the Atlantic with some of theatres biggest names. … Read more

20. Jesus Christ Superstar Jesus Christ Superstar was the second work from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Superstar began life as a rock opera in double concept album form. Looking at the last days of Jesus Christ from the viewpoint of Judas Iscariot, the rock operas route to the stage was never assured but a concert staging in front of 13,000 in Pittsburgh paved the way for a Broadway staging that opened in October 1971. Jesus Christ Superstar arrived at the palace Theatre London in 1972 where it remained for eight years. The first-ever Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical, CATS opened last night (31 July 2016) at the Neil Simon Theatre. After the triumphant opening night performance, celebrity guests celebrated with Andrew Lloyd Webber, star Leona Lewis, and the New Generation of CATS with a Jellicle Ball at Gotham Hall. Earlier in the evening, Andrew Lloyd Webber celebrated three shows currently running on Broadway with a photo opportunity backstage that included Leona Lewis (as Grizabella from CATS), Alex Brightman (as Dewey Finn from School of Rock – The Musical) and James Barbour (as the Phantom from The Phantom of the Opera). Beverley Knight is to take on the role of Grizabella when Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical Cats returns to the London Palladium this October. Beverley Knight said: “To be asked to join the company of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s historic show was so exciting and totally unexpected as, vocally, I am so different to the many incredible women who have sung the classic Memory over the years. To follow in their footsteps is something to truly relish! I am really looking forward to transforming into Grizabella with her fabulous costume and amazing make up and to be playing the role at the London Palladium.
