Tom Stoppard’s Travesties Transfers To Apollo Theatre

Book tickets for Travesties by Tom Stopard

The Menier Chocolate Factory and Sonia Friedman productions have announced that Tom Stoppard’s award-winning comedy Travesties will transfer to the Apollo Theatre in February 2017. Travesties tickets are now on sale. Tom Stoppard’s dazzling comedy of art, love and revolution features James Joyce, Tristan Tzara and Lenin as remembered — and misremembered — by Henry Carr, a minor British diplomat in Zurich 1917. When Gwendolen and Cecily wander in from The Importance of Being Earnest, Henry’s mind wanders too. He knows he was Algernon in a production in Zurich. But who was the other one? The original production of Travesties premiered at the Aldwych Theatre in 1974, winning the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy and a New York Critic’s Circle and Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway. Travesties broke box office records at the Menier Chocolate Factory selling out ahead of its first preview. This new production is … Read more

Kristen Scott Thomas Plays Queen In Audience Revival

Kristen Scott Thomas to play The Queen in The Audience

Kristin Scott Thomas will play the Queen in a new version of Peter Morgan’s The Audience which will preview at the Apollo Theatre from April 12, 2015. For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said, not even to their spouses. The Audience imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister uses these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. In turn, the Queen can’t help but reveal her own self as she advises, consoles and, on occasion, teases. These private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age, from the beginning of Elizabeth II’s reign to today. Politicians come and go through the revolving door … Read more

Urinetown Transfers to West End in September

Urinteown St James Theatre

Following its success earlier this year at the St James Theatre, it has been announced that Jamie Lloyd’s production of Urinetown will transfer to The Apollo Theatre in September this year. The musical written by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotsis, Urinetown is set in a Gotham-like city of the future where a hero leads the people in a revolt against people using private toilets. Also represented in the West End by his productions of Richard III and The Commitments, Jamie Lloyd said earlier today “Having attracted a diverse audience of all ages at the St James earlier this year, I’m bursting to bring our production of this brilliantly off-kilter musical comedy to the West End, where I hope we’ll make an even bigger splash“. Casting for the transfer is still to be announced.
