The acclaimed Broadway production of Sunday In The Park With George starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford is to open at the Savoy Theatre, London for a strictly limited season in June 2020.
There are many ways to read the play, but the most obvious is probably correct. Sylvia is a metaphor for a trophy girlfriend; she is someone Greg can use to make himself feel better about himself, rather than actually work on his own complex personality issues. Someone he can effectively cheat on with in front of his wife’s eyes, that he can challenge her with, that he can use to bring his wife to heel.
There are forced laughs, natural laughs, gentle laughs, belly laughs and many, many smiles over the course of the production. By the final Act, however, you realise that Ellis had a clear purpose from the very start; a magic trick he pulls off with finesse.
Billy Porter is wonderful as the cross-dressing Lola, funny and fragile, but one vaguely wonders whether his voice will last the distance. The performance of the evening comes from Annaleigh Ashford who is perfect in every way as the feisty local gal who gets the Boss.
