The Olivier Awards 2018 were held last night at the Royal Albert Hall with Hamilton and The Ferryman amongst the nights biggest winners. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton was the big winner at last night’s Olivier Awards picking up not only the coveted award for Best New Musical, but also Best Actor in a Musical (Giles Terera), Best Supporting Actor In A Musical (Michael Jibson), Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best New Musical, Best Choreography and Outstanding Achievement in Music. Jez Butterworth’s play The Ferryman won Best New Play, Best Director for Sam Mendes alongside the award for Best Actress in a Play (Laura Donnelly). Bryan Cranston was awarded Best Actor in a Play for his role on Network at the National Theatre. The nominees for the 2018 Olivier Awards have been announced with Hamilton receiving a record 13 nominations. Elaine Paige and Alexandra Burke have announced the nominations for the 2018 Olivier Awards. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton leads the race with a record-breaking 13 nominations closely followed by The Ferryman with 8 nominations. The 2018 Olivier Awards will be held at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 8 April 2018 in a ceremony hosted by Catherine Tate. Stephen Sondheim’s musical Follies is to return to the National Theatre in 2019. Following a critically acclaimed run in 2017-18, Stephen Sondheim and James Golman’s musical Follies is to return to the National Theatre in 2019. Casting and production dates will be announced in the near future. The production recently won two awards at the London’s Critic’s Circle Theatre Awards for Dominic Cooke (Best Director) and Vicki Mortimer (Best Designer). A cast album of the production is expected to be released in the coming months. Dominic Cooke’s production of Follies saw the show restored scenes cut from the 1971 Broadway premiere and used Jonathan Tunick’s full original orchestration and saw the show returned to its original one-act structure. An Octoroon, (Orange Tree Theatre) This year saw the arrival in the UK of the work of acclaimed American playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Hampstead Theatre presented his dark unsettling satire Gloria while the Orange Tree Theatre gave us his theatrically inventive play An Octoroon. Using Dion Boucicault’s once-popular 1858 melodrama The Octoroon as its starting point, this cleverly explored the black experience from the perspective of 19th-century slavery. With a strong cast directed by Ned Bennett, the production was bursting with ideas, laughs and energy, often breaking the fourth wall to great effect. Read my review.
