Dan Freeman’s hit play A Joke explores our attitudes to humour and life. An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman find themselves in a void and must work out who and where they are. Are they constituents of a story, or is the joke on them? They approach the world respectively with fear, optimism and acceptance and gradually begin to solve the mystery of their own existence and ours.

John Bett is a founding member of 7:84 Theatre Company, John has appeared in numerous theatre shows including: The Bacchae(National Theatre of Scotland); Antony & Cleopatra (Shakespeare’s Globe); The Tobacco Merchant’s Lawyer, The Government Inspector (Tron Theatre, Best Actor nomination); Scenes from an Execution (Best Actor, Critic’s Circle Awards/Dundee Rep); A Christmas Carol (Best Actor nomination, Critics Circle Awards), Remembrance of Things Past(National Theatre) and The Great Northern Welly Boot Show (Edinburgh Festival/Young Vic Theatre). His film credits include: Tamara Drew, The Golden Compass, Shallow Grave, Britannia Hospital, Gregory’s Girl and Tess. TV includes: A Very English Scandal, Scotland in a Day, Father Brown, Rab C Nesbitt, New Town, Rebus, Vanity Fair, and Inspector Morse.

He joins Sylvester McCoy (Dr Who, The Hobbit) and Robert Picardo (Star Trek Voyager, Stargate Atlantis).

A Joke is directed by Tony Cownie (The Belle’s Stratagem, The Venetian Twins), produced by Tomek Borkowy (Universal Arts Productions) and Ed Littlewood (Scene Change Productions) and designed by Neil Murray (Brief Encounter, Steptoe and Son).

A Joke is presented at the Ballroom at Assembly Room from 2 – 26 August as part of the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe prior to a national tour.
