costruito in coppia con l’Aldwych e originariamente battezzato Waldorf Theatre

aprì il 22 maggio 1905. Fu rinominato Strand Theatre nel 1901

poi Whitney Theatre nel 1911

per tornare a Strand Theatre nel 1913. Nel corso degli anni ha ospitato molte produzioni di grande richiamo. Negli anni ’40

la commedia nera Arsenic and Old Lace totalizzò 1.337 repliche; nel 1955 Sailor

Beware! arrivò a 1.231 repliche; e la commedia del 1971 No Sex Please

We’re British rimase in cartellone per 10 anni prima di trasferirsi al Garrick Theatre (per altri 6 anni). Nel 2005 il teatro è stato ribattezzato Novello Theatre in onore del compositore e attore Ivor Novello

che tra il 1913 e il 1951 visse in un appartamento sopra il teatro. Il XXI secolo ha portato nuovi successi con la stagione 2005/06 della Royal Shakespeare Company

che includeva Twelfth Night

The theatre

built as a pair with the Aldwych and originally titles the Waldorf Theatre

opened on 22 May 1905. It was renamed the Strand Theatre in 1901

then the Whitney Theatre in 1911

and reverted to the Strand Theatre in 1913. The theatre has enjoyed many famous productions. In the 1940s

The Comedy of Errors

A Midsummer Night’s Dream and As You Like It. A string of musicals followed with mixed results. This included the London premiere of Footloose in 2006

the European premiere of The Drowsy Chaperone in 2007 (which closed after 2 months due to lack of audience)

and the world premiere of Desperately Seeking Susan (also in 2007

the show closed after 1 month after unfavorable reviews). The theatre is currently home to Mama Mia! which transferred after an 8 year run at the Prince of Wales Theatre.
