Mary Poppins the musical

Based on the books by P L Travers and the classic Disney film, Mary Poppins the musical continues to enchant audiences worldwide.

Mary Poppins the musical is now playing in a revival season at London’s Prince Edwards Theatre where it originally opened in 2004 following a tryout at the Bristol Hippodrome.

Mary Poppins the stage musical is based on the original Disney film from 1964 which featured Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke which used the stories of a magical nanny written by author P L Travers as source material. The film and stage show featured a score by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman. Mary Poppins the musical on stage features additional songs written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe and a script by Julian Fellowes.

The original West End season of Mary Poppins was awarded with Olivier Awards in 2005 for Laura Michell Kelly (Best Actress In A Musical) and Michael Bourne and Richard Eyre for Best Theatre Choreography. When the musical opened on Broadway in 2007 it won the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design along with the Drama Desk for Outstanding Set Design for Bob Crowley and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical Tony Award for Gavin Lee who played Bert.

The original London production of Marry Poppins the musical would run from 15 Dec 2004 to 12 January 2009. The revival of the show opened on 23 October 2019 and was temporarily closed during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The show is scheduled to re-open on 22 May 2021.

The original Broadway production would run for 2619 performances closing on 3 March 2013 where it remains the 23 longest-running show on Broadway.

Mary Poppins has been played in Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and United States, and has been translated into thirteen languages (Swedish, Finnish, Hungarian, Danish, Dutch, Czech, Estonian, Spanish, Icelandic, German, Norwegian, Italian, and Japanese). Over eleven million people have seen the show worldwide.

New Mary Poppins Movie Sequel Announced

Whilst not strictly on the subject of British Theatre, we thought this news item might be of interest with the new national tour of Mary Poppins kicking off in a few short weeks. It has been announced today that Disney is developing a new live action film that will be a sequel to the studios beloved 1964 original film Mary Poppins. The film is to be directed by Rob Marshall (Into The Woods, Chicago, Nine) with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Smash, Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) in charge of writing original songs. David Magee (Finding Neverland) will write the screenplay. Mary Poppins – Further Tour Dates Announced

A further three stops have been announced on the forthcoming tour of the sward-winning musical Mary Poppins. In addition to dates in Leicester, Bristol, Bublin, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Southampton, Mary will now also fly into Norwich, Plymouth and Newcastle.
