New cast members for Hamilton London
Hamilton London welcomes 20 new cast members at the Victoria Palace Theatre as the show enters its second year.
Hamilton the musical has a book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton whose face features on the American ten-dollar bill.
Hamilton fast became a cultural phenomenon, in part due to casting of a mix of actors of colour in the roles that might have traditionally been played by caucasian actors. It has been described by Lin-Manuel as “American then, as told by America now!”
Hamilton the musical started life as the Hamilton Mix Tape which was supposed to be a concept album of a life told in hip hop but this quickly developed into a stage musical after the video of Miranda performing the title track at the White House for the Obamas went viral.
Hamilton premiered off-Broadway at New York’s Public Theatre. After a sold-out critically acclaimed season, the show transferred to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre where it is still playing to sell-out houses.
Hamilton won eight Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical, Eleven 2016 Tony Awards and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize For Drama.
On its opening in London at the Victoria Palace Theatre, Hamilton the musical won the Olivier Award for Best Musical and the Best Actor Olivier for Giles Terrera who plays the show’s protagonist Aaron Burr. As this is written, Hamilton has become one of the only musical running during the pandemic with the opening of a production in Australia.

A bidding war is currently underway for a specially recorded presentation of Broadway’s mega-hit musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Wall Street Journal has reported that rather than making a new movie musical at this stage, a recording of the original Broadway production Hamilton made over two nights may well be the first wer see of the musical on screen. The recording features the Original Broadway cast with Miranda in the title role and according to reports even includes an interval. The interesting question at the moment is whether we will see the special recording on the big screen or through an online streaming service like Netflix on our own screens at home. Producers Jeffrey Seller and Cameron Mackintosh announced today that Hamilton London would extend its booking period to Saturday 30 March 2019.
In the run-up to the London opening of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning musical Hamilton, some cynics wondered if the musical based on early American history would translate for British audiences. Based on the critical and public reception which greeted the show, those fears were unfounded. Hamilton is a resounding critical success and has been greeted with the type of audience reaction most shows can only dream of. In recent days on Twitter, Lin-Manuel revealed that three small lyric tweaks have been made to the libretto of Hamilton in London. The first tweak is in the song “Take a Break“. To celebrate the London opening of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton the musical, this great video featuring Lin-Manuel, Alex Lacamoire, the orchestra and cast of Hamilton created this great Brit Pop mash up. In true Aaron Sorkin ‘West-Wing’ style, this amazing sing and walk takes you from the orchestra pit of the show, backstage and then onto David Korins’ magnificant set on the stage of the newly renovated Victoria Palace Theatre. Ham4Ham started as a way to entertain the Hamilton fans waiting for tickets outside the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The shows soon became an institution with the great and good of Broadway taking part. At certain performances, the role of Alexander Hamilton will be played by Ash Hunter.
