Chicago the musical returned to the West End on Wednesday Night. Take a look at Piers Allardyce’s great photos of Opening Night Curtain Call and the after party at L’Escargot in Soho. Chicago is back in the West End at the Phoenix Theatre starring Cuba Gooding Jr, Sarah Soetaert, Josefina Gabrielle, Ruthie Henshall and Paul Rider. After a knockout show and standing ovation, the cast and other celebrities partied at L’Escargot. Chicago originally ran in London for 15 years, making it the West End’s longest running revival. The show continues to run on Broadway where it is the longest running American musical. Chicago has won six Tony Awards, two Olivier awards and a Grammy. Take a look at Tristram Kenton’s first look production photos from the London revival of Kander and Ebb’s award-winning musical Chicago. Now in previews, Chicago stars Cuba Gooding Jr as Billy Flynn, Sarah Soetaert as Roxie Hart, Josefina Gabrielle as Velma Kelly, Ruthie Henshall as Mama Morton and Paul Rider as Amos Hart. Chicago, which is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, has a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The Broadway revival of Chicago was choreographed by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse, directed by Walter Bobbie and produced by Barry and Fran Weissler. The Olivier Awards 2018 were held last night at the Royal Albert Hall with Hamilton and The Ferryman amongst the nights biggest winners. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton was the big winner at last night’s Olivier Awards picking up not only the coveted award for Best New Musical, but also Best Actor in a Musical (Giles Terera), Best Supporting Actor In A Musical (Michael Jibson), Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best New Musical, Best Choreography and Outstanding Achievement in Music. Jez Butterworth’s play The Ferryman won Best New Play, Best Director for Sam Mendes alongside the award for Best Actress in a Play (Laura Donnelly). Bryan Cranston was awarded Best Actor in a Play for his role on Network at the National Theatre. The Young Vic has announced casting for its production of the award-winning musical Fun Home at the Young Vic. The Young Vic have announced preliminary casting for its upcoming production of the award-winning musical Fun Home which will play at the Young Vic from 18 June to 1 September 2018. The adult cast for the production includes Kaisa Hammarlund as Alison; Eleanor Kane as Medium Alison; Jenna Russell as Helen; Ashley Samuels as Roy, Mark and Jeremy; Cherrelle Skeete as Joan and Zubin Varla as Bruce, Alison’s father. Sir Matthew Bourne talks about New Adventures and their re-telling of the classic story Cinderella which is touring the UK. The most striking aspect of this re-telling of the Cinderella story is the setting. Why did you choose to set the world’s most famous fairy tale during the London Blitz in 1940? I first fell in love with Prokofiev’s score through watching Frederick Ashton’s version of the ballet for The Royal Ballet. Although composed as a fairy-tale piece, in the style of the great Tchaikovsky ballets, such as “The Sleeping Beauty”, it has Prokofiev’s particular 20th century musical personality stamped all over it. True, it has Grand Waltzes, Fairy variations, mazurka’s and “national” dances, in the manner of Tchaikovsky’s most famous ballet works, but lurking beneath the fairy-tale magic, there beats a darker heart with real emotions and dramatic longing.
