FIRST LOOK: Back To The Future the musical in rehearsals
Back To The Future the musical is now in rehearsals for its upcoming out of town preview at the Manchester Opera House prior to a West End transfer.
Back To The Future the musical West End is a musical with music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballards and a book by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale based on the original 1985 film of the same name.
Back To The Future the musical arrives in the West End several years later than planned. The show had a preview run and World premiere at Manchester Opera House in February 2020. The Manchester run and West End transfer had to be paused as the pandemic hit and theatres were closed.
The production was directed by John Rando, choreography by Chris Bailey, set and costume design by Tim Hatley, video design by Finn Ross, lighting by Tim Lutkin and Hugh Vanstone, fight and stunt direction by Maurice Chan and illusions by Chris Fisher. The films’ composer, Alan Silvestri was to compose a new score with Glen Ballard, with the addition of original songs from the film, including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode”. sound design is by Gareth Owen, musical supervision and vocal arrangements by Nick Finlow and orchestrations by Ethan Popp.
Back To The Future the musical West End opened on 13 September 2021 at the Adelphi Theatre.
Back To The Future the musical West End features Olly Dobson as Marty, Rogert Bart as Emmett Brown, Huge Coles as George McFly, Rosanna Hyland as Lorraine Baines-McFly, and Cedric Neal as Goldie Wilson / Marvin Berry.

It has been reported by Baz Bamingboye in the Daily Mail that Jamie Lloyd has withdrawn as director of the upcoming musical version of Back To The Future just as workshops of the show were due to be staged. Lloyd’s withdrawal is amicable and comes after disagreements with original screenwriter Bob Gale over the productions direction. Lloyd is reported as saying ” You absolutely have to believe in it or there’s not much point”. Originally expected to arrive in the West End in 2015, this development will push the project back until at least 2016. Watch this space for more developments. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale are working with Universal Stage Productions (Wicked and Billy Elliot), London-based producer Colin Ingram (Ghost – The Musical) and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to develop a stage musical version of their film Back to the Future.
