Diana And Wallis Come Together In Camp One Man Show

Chris Ioan Roberts in Dead Royal at the Oval House Theatre London

Dead Royal is a lacerating, camp-drenched celebration of 1980’s narcissistic meglomania. Villa Windsor, Paris, 1981 – Wallis, Duchess of Windsor aged 82, invites Lady Diana Spencer aged 19 to a despair-laden bachelorette party on the eve of her wedding to the Prince of Wales. This vulgar comedy explores the notion of those marrying into the royal family and how they are regarded by history. It is a piece riffling on drag, early 80s fashion, Princess Diana obsession, historical melodrama and physical theatre. The script makes use of original quotes drawn from interviews with Wallis Simpson and Diana Spencer and evokes the plantation period of the Deep South and the clipped drawl of the Sloane Ranger. The relentless inappropriate language evokes a sense of otherness to allow audiences to feel as if they have intruded on a private moment. Chris Roberts, one of London’s most subversive actor-directors, plays both characters – … Read more

REVIEW: Ruby Wax – Sane New World ✭✭✭

Ruby Wax in Sane New World At The St James Theatre

Ruby Wax is a transatlantic treasure. So it was terribly exciting to hear of her brand new one woman show, Sane New World, playing for a limited run at the St. James Theatre. But there was a spark missing tonight. Ruby, vibrant as ever, with her quick wit, and honest opinions of her own neuroses, unfortunately gave us less of a journey-filled one woman show, and more of a neuroscience lecture, with jokes.

Beautiful – the Carole King Musical has now opened in London at the Aldwych Theatre. Here’s a summary of what the major critics had to say. Book tickets to Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. Stephen Collins BritishTheatre.com ★★★★★ Everything about the production seems fresher, lovelier and livelier than on Broadway. It’s a feast for eyes and ears and, when it is done, the feeling of elation is irresistible. I can count on one hand the number of musicals which have tempted me to dance along with the final tune, after the bows, but this show is another. And at its heart is the phenomenal Katie Brayben. This is the kind of musical one can see every week and not regret spending the time or money in so doing. Fundamentally fabulous and perfectly executed. REVIEW: Stand And Deliver, King’s Head Theatre ✭

Stand And Deliver at the Kings Head Theatre

Stand and Deliver is a curious piece of theatre, now playing at the King’s Head in Angel. There are some very funny moments reminiscent of Carry On, some football humour that many fanboys across the country will enjoy, and a dash of 1980s nostalgia in the form of some fantastic chart toppers, but ultimately, as a piece of theatre, it does not hold together in present form.
