Douglas Henshall joins Bryan Cranston and Michelle Dockery in Network at National Theatre

The National Theatre have announced that Douglas Henshall will play Max Schumacher in the world premiere of Network – Lee Hall’s new adaptation of the Oscar-winning film by Paddy Chayefsky. Henshall joins Tony Award winner Bryan Cranston as Howard Beale and Michelle Dockery as Diana Christenson. Network will be directed by Ivo Van Hove. Howard Beale, news anchor-man, isn’t pulling in the viewers. In his final broadcast he unravels live on screen. But when the ratings soar, the network seizes on their new found populist prophet, and Howard becomes the biggest thing on TV. Network depicts a dystopian media landscape where opinion trumps fact. Hilarious and horrifying by turns, the iconic film by Paddy Chayefsky won four Academy Awards in 1976. Producers have advised that on the advice of doctors Sarah Lancashire has had to withdraw from the upcoming production of James Graham’s Labour Of Love. Olivier Award-winning actress Tamsin Greig will now play Jean Whittaker opposite Martin Freeman as David Lyons. Greig and Freeman join Rachel Sterling (Elizabeth Lyons), Kwong Loke (Mr Shen), Dickon Tyrrell (Len Prior) and Susan Wokoma (Margot Midler) in Jeremy Herrin’s production which reunites Herrin and Graham following their previous collaboration on Headlong’s This House which recently played at the Garrick Theatre following an acclaimed run at the National Theatre. The Bush Theatre is to host four of Iranian theatre-maker Nassim Soleimanpour’s plays this September. The plays will include Nassim, commissioned by the Bush Theatre directed by Omar Elerian and a Fringe First winner at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe; international hit White Rabbit Red Rabbit; BLANK (Bush Theatre’s RADAR 2015 and Edinburgh Fringe 2016) and new play Cook, co-created by Soleimanpour and Danish director Jesper Pedersen. The plays will play in repertory over two weeks. The works which require no rehearsals, no preparation, just a sealed envelope and a different actor each night reading a script for the first time. At each performance, a different cultural figure will take the stage. When her friend Professor Bhaer tells Jo she can do better by making her stories more personal, she weaves the story of how she and her sisters grew up in Civil War America – a tale of self-discovery, heartache, hope and everlasting love.
