Prsent Laughter Old Vic Theatre

The Old Vic Theatre has announced that Matthew Warchus is to direct Noel Coward’s provocative comedy, Present Laughter from 17 June – 10 August 2019.

The cast will include  Andrew Scott (BBC’s Sherlock, Sea Wall – The Old Vic, Hamlet – Almeida/West End, Birdland – Royal Court), Luke Thallon (The Inheritance – Young Vic, Bent – National Theatre), Sophie Thompson (The Importance Of Being Earnest – West End, Guys and Dolls Chichester/ West End), Suzie Toase (One Man, Two Guvnors – National Theatre/West End, My Fair Lady (National Theatre, West End) and Indira Warma (The Hothouse – West End, Into The Woods – Royal Opera House).

Director, Matthew Warchus, said: ‘Originally titled Sweet Sorrow, Noël Coward’s most autobiographical work is a giddy and passionate observation of narcissism, hero worship and loneliness. Most of my favourite plays are comedies with added emotional dimensions and Present Laughter is a laugh-out-loud sex comedy with, I think, surprising depths. I’m delighted to be working with Andrew Scott again (after collaborating on the film Pride), together with what promises to be a cast of outstanding comic actors.’

Present Laughter will be designed by Rob Howell, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone and sound design by Simon Baker.
