Sonia Friedman Productions and Neal Street Productions have announced new casting Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman currently playing at the Gielgud Theatre. Directed by Sam Mendes, The Ferryman opened at the Royal Court to critical acclaim becoming the fastest selling show in the theatre’s history. The show has continued its success since transferring to the Gielgud Theatre where it is now booking until January 2018. The Hampstead season has all but sold out, if not actually sold out. Make every effort to grab a return. The production really ought to transfer to the West End and run and run, preferably at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. To see this rich plum pudding of a play in the theatre which is closest to the place where Foote worked his magic, and which bears the name of Foote’s own passion, would be really something.
Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol returns to the London stage later this year in a new version adapted by Patrick Barlow and starring Academy Award-winning actor Jim Broadbent. Jim Broadbent will be joined by an exciting group of performers who will bring characters from Tiny Tim to Bob Cratchit to life as part of Dicken’s tale of grief, ghoulish ghosts, greed and eleventh-hour redemption. A Christmas Carol is to be directed by Olivier award-winning Phelim McDermott, Artistic Director of Improbable, one of Britain’s most inventive theatre companies, responsible for the iconic production Shockheaded Peter. Refreshing and fascinating. Findlay breathes complexity and assuredness into Shakespeare’s play by focussing on sex and greed. But there is no shortage of hatred either.
