REVIEW: The Merchant Of Venice, Almeida Theatre ✭✭✭✭✭
Tom Scutt’s design is overwhelmingly attractive. Seductive blue and gold enhances the structures where the action occurs – a garishly compelling sense of Venice and Las Vegas: time and space are fused in the bauble land where Antonio and Shylock take their commercial risks. Greed and choice become the central focus here.
Ian McDiarmid To Play Shylock At Almeida
Full casting is today announced for Rupert Goold’s The Merchant of Venice at the Almeida Theatre. Former Almeida Artistic Director Ian McDiarmid will play Shylock alongside Susannah Fielding and Scott Handy, who reprise their roles as Portia and Antonio. The company includes Vinta Morgan, Vincenzo Nicoli, Finlay Robertson, Raphael Sowole, Tim Steed, Jonathan Tafler, Anthony Welsh, Tom Weston-Jones and original RSC cast members Jamie Beamish, Rebecca Brewer, Caroline Martin and Emily Plumtree. Bakersfield Mist Announces Early Closure
Bakersfield Mist which stars Kathleen Turner, currently playing at the Duchess Theatre is to close three week earlier due to poor ticket sales. The show will now close on August 9. In a statement, the producers said: ” the show did well until the school holidays, however it seems we haven’t captured the tourist audience, so we have decided to finish at 13 weeks instead of 16 and not play the tricky August weeks.” “We would like to thank all of the production team, and Kathleen Turner and Ian McDiarmid for their acclaimed performances.” Book tickets now for the remainder of the season at the Duchess Theatre.

There is, perhaps, 40 minutes of good material here, material which ungarnished with irrelevancy may have made for an interesting theatrical experience.
