Chicago the musical returned to the West End on Wednesday Night. Take a look at Piers Allardyce’s great photos of Opening Night Curtain Call and the after party at L’Escargot in Soho. Chicago is back in the West End at the Phoenix Theatre starring Cuba Gooding Jr, Sarah Soetaert, Josefina Gabrielle, Ruthie Henshall and Paul Rider. After a knockout show and standing ovation, the cast and other celebrities partied at L’Escargot. Chicago originally ran in London for 15 years, making it the West End’s longest running revival. The show continues to run on Broadway where it is the longest running American musical. Chicago has won six Tony Awards, two Olivier awards and a Grammy. Take a look at Tristram Kenton’s first look production photos from the London revival of Kander and Ebb’s award-winning musical Chicago. Now in previews, Chicago stars Cuba Gooding Jr as Billy Flynn, Sarah Soetaert as Roxie Hart, Josefina Gabrielle as Velma Kelly, Ruthie Henshall as Mama Morton and Paul Rider as Amos Hart. Chicago, which is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, has a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The Broadway revival of Chicago was choreographed by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse, directed by Walter Bobbie and produced by Barry and Fran Weissler. Chicago returns to London’s Phoenix Theatre

Following a five and a half year absence, Chicago the musical returns to London’s West End as the show celebrates its 21st Anniversary. Now the longest-running American musical in history, Chicago will open at the Phoenix Theatre from 26 March 2018. Chicago originally opened at the Adelphi Theatre in 1997 to rave reviews, winning the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production. It transferred to the Cambridge Theatre in April 2006, then transferred to the Garrick Theatre until September 2012. It’s fifteen year run made Chicago the West End’s longest-running revival. 20. Jesus Christ Superstar Jesus Christ Superstar was the second work from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Superstar began life as a rock opera in double concept album form. Looking at the last days of Jesus Christ from the viewpoint of Judas Iscariot, the rock operas route to the stage was never assured but a concert staging in front of 13,000 in Pittsburgh paved the way for a Broadway staging that opened in October 1971. Chicago producer David Ian has announced that Jessie Wallace will join the cast of the international award-winning musical Chicago, playing the role of Mama Morton. Wallace will join the show when it plays Nottingham, Belfast, Liverpool, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Bromley, Woking, Canterbury, Norwich and Leeds. Jessie Wallace is best known for playing Kat Slater in EastEnders, a role for which she has won numerous awards. Her other TV credits include Amy Kriel in Wild at Heart and Pat Phoenix in The Road to Coronation Street, for which she was nominated for a Bafta Award. Her theatre credits include Maureen in Rent Remixed in the West End, Fings Ain’t Wot They Used T’Be at the Theatre Royal Stratford East and Sylvia in the national tour of Stepping Out.
