Gypsy is a musical that is loosely based of the life of famous Striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee based on her 1957 memoirs.

The musical follows Momma Rose and her daughters June and Louise. Rose is the ultimate stage mother ruthlessly driving June towards stardom by whatever means possible. When her daughter flees she transfers her own dreams of stardom onto her other daughter Louise who goes on to become Gypsy Rose Lee but not before mother and daughter become estranged.

Gypsy was written by the greatest names in Broadway musical history including Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Into The Woods, Sweeney Todd and Assassins), Jule Styne (Peter Pan, Funny Girl) and Arthur Laurents (La Cage Aux Folles, West Side Story). Labelled a musical fable the show was more a love-letter to Broadway.


The production is Gypsy coming to the Savoy Theatre was presented at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2014 to unanimous rave reviews. The production stars reknown British actress Imelda Staunton who is well known for her stage work in Sweeney Todd and Good People and her films including Harry Potter, Pride and Vera Drake. The role of Momma Rose is much sought after by actresses and has been played by the greats including Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bette Midler, Bernadette Peter and Patti Lu Pone amongst others.


Well known British Actress Bonnie Langford won the 1974 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress In A Musical for Gypsy.

Rumours about a film remake of the musical starring Barbara Streisand started doing the rounds in 2011.
