Profile Information

What I do... (Actor, director, designer, teacher etc?)
I am a Actor/Director and Artistic Director of Lazarus, a new theatre company commited to producing the best classic works for a modern theatregoer.
LAZARUS

Welcome to the home of Lazarus Theatre Company, a company truly committed to producing the best in London Fringe Theatre.

Inspired by a broad and diverse range of material we hope that our work informs, inspires and provokes our audiences, offering a fresh and bold re-imagination of some of the greatest works ever written. Through the use of text, song, music and movement we hope to offer an exciting theatrical experience; our work involves ensemble storytelling with intimacy and detail at its heart.

Season 2009 has already started with incredible momentum; our production of John Webster’s “The Duchess of Malfi” received glowing reviews and in turn played a sell out run at The Blue Elephant Theatre, Camberwell.

In this our third year we are building strong links with theatres, practitioners and artists as well as the most important aspect of our work, our audience.

The first thing that inspired me in theatre...
being part of an ensemble, working with like minded folks with a passion fro theatre.
My favourite theatre something is...
the noise of an audiance before "the curtain" goes up
The thing that annoys me about our industry...
the lack of funding for theatre, British Theatre is world famous and should be finacially supported

Hi Ricky – glad you have the script about which the following:
This is highly poetic piece (as you can see) but one without
Noticeable directional notes. This is deliberate as I believe that
The director must be free in all aspects of the work (staging, lights
Costume, setting etc) with the same freedom that the writer gives
himself in writing the piece.
Any comments which you may have will be gladly received
& responded to – so here’s hoping that we will have this
opportunity to work together
looking forward to hearing from you

Hi Ricky:- good to get your comment –so, what am i up to at the moment? Well at the moment I am writing the final draft of my poetic drama Orpheus Descending –a piece for two actors (& a singing voice off stage) dealing with Orpheus as he prepares to descend to the Underworld in search of his great love.
I love the classical, poetic drama form & can only which that there were more outlets for it in the present climate. The drama is of course essential to any society that aspires to be ‘civil’ & as such verse-drama is one of the highest forms that can be practiced.
Also, the National Theatre of Ireland are reading my verse-play on Yeats ‘The Silence & The Moon’ –so as you see, it’s busy times here in Belgium.
Sometimes I bemoan the fact that, regarding my work at least, that I live in a non-English speaking country –even so, I have managed in the last two years to have two plays preformed in English ‘Troy’ & ‘Gilgamesh’ so perhaps all is not lost.
Let me know what plays you are involved with at the moment & any other news
Respect
Martin
